Five Pawns: Signature Sample Pack Review

I've heard and read good things about Five Pawns and "Apparently" they produce the best e-liquid blends available on the market - so obviously i couldn't help myself and for the price i expect BIG things. This is my review of the Five Pawns Signature Series e-liquids. Five Pawns is a gourmet e-liquid vendor based in California, USA and the Signature Series was in development  for 6 months before release (as stated on their website). All their liquids are made in-house with the ingredients sourced domestically or locally. I didn't purchase direct from the manufacturer because i don't live in the US and had to get a contact to do that for me as at the time i wanted to place the order there wasn't any international shipping and i believe there still isn't. The sample pack is definitely up there in price being $23.50 for 5 x 4ml bottles (20ml) and i just couldn't justify spending $100+ to review products i might not even enjoy. When i test liquids i usually take my time and each blend here didn't last half the day (yes i know it's a "sample pack". I do however like to test all lines a vendor produces and have another 5 x 4ml sample pack on the way: The Mixology Edition MMXIV (This will be a seperate review).

Please note: Any e-liquids that say IN TESTING or AWAITING REVIEW/DELIVERY next to the title will be updated in due time. These reviews are my own opinions and the score i give each is my own preference score. A rating of 7 for me might be a 10 for you. 10 for me is the perfect vape in flavour complexity, vapour production and throat hit on any and every device i try it on.

GRANDMASTER REVIEW: 12mg

Testing Period: 4 - 8 Hrs
Received: This product was purchased by me.
Equipment: Eleaf iStick, Aspire Nautilus Mini, Aspire Nautilus BVC atomizer - 1.8ohm @ 14 Watts.

My initial expectations before testing the Grandmaster blend was high and all the hype flooding around forums had me extremely excited. The vendor website emphasizes "creamy peanut butter, banana cream and balanced with velvety caramel". When i first opened the sampler i did get that nutty - sweet banana type aroma and the liquid was "so - so" in viscosity which is to be expected with a 50/50 blend. I found the Grandmaster complex in aroma in the beginning, but after a few good sniffs the flavours were to an extent discernible to me. I wouldn't throw "creamy" into the mix as the vendor does because i didn't find it creamy in the slightest but i did find it quite smooth (not velvety) but still very nice with a respectable throat hit. Flavour wise the peanut butter (more on the nutty side) came through for me during the exhale and i do love my peanut butter. On the inhale i tasted a distinct candied banana type flavour with ever so slight tones of (what tasted to me) like an old english toffee.  all in all - a pleasant dessert gourmet blend. Vapour production came through superbly on the Nautilus and the 50% VG content contributes to that. Could this blend be an all day vape? Not for me but i could see a dessert vaper loving this stuff. On a scale of 1 to 10 the Grandmaster gets a above average 6.

ABSOLUTE PIN REVIEW: 12mg

Testing Period: 4 - 8 Hrs

I found the Absolute Pin probably the 2nd most complex blend i've ever encountered. Distinct notes of rich Irish Cream, hints of Cinnamon with undertones of liquorice and mint with which sometimes during exhale i could only describe as the most luxurious, minty Cinnamon roll on the planet. A very robust blend and something completely different. I'm not sure what type i would class this though because sometimes it's a beverage vape and then other times it's a dessert vape - very complex. Throat hit suited me perfectly and i would class it higher than medium in terms of kick - although i'm not a fan of anything that has mint! i do however like beverage vapes and the Irish Cream came through for me superbly. Vapour production on par with the Grandmaster which makes sense being the same ratio and tested on the same setup. Could this be an all day vape? Not for me again because i feel blends like this should only be used as a treat for those that like this kind of flavour profile - or if it was used as an all day vape, that would be it, just the day and not the rest of the week. On a scale of 1 to 10 the Absolute Pin absolutely gets a 6.

BOWDEN'S MATE REVIEW: 12mg

Testing Period: 4 - 8 Hrs
Received: This product was purchased by me.
Equipment: Eleaf iStick, Aspire Nautilus Mini, Aspire Nautilus BVC atomizer - 1.8ohm @ 15.5 Watts.

Bowden's mate for me is probably the easiest review so far. If you've ever had an after dinner mint crisp like an After Eight - well there you go. Light in flavour, undertones of vanilla with a milky chocolate taste that wasn't too strong but i did find the mint a touch overboard. Nice throat hit with a cooling finish and only just slightly sweet. Vapour production i found seemed a little more cloudy than the previous 2 on the same setup but then again i was on 15.5 Watts. As a desert vape this is very nice and if the mint doesn't bother you it'll probably be a nice edition to a collection. Could this blend be an all day vape? Not for me and i can't see how it could be for anyone even if you love it because i think after a few hours your taste buds would need another flavour to rescue them. On a scale of 1 to 10 Bowden's mate gets a friendly 5.

GAMBIT REVIEW: 12mg

Testing Period: 4 - 8 Hrs

Equipment: Eleaf iStick, Aspire Nautilus Mini, Aspire Nautilus BVC atomizer - 1.8ohm @ 14 Watts.

The Gambit is described by the vendor as "sweet and mellow ripe apple with savory pie crust and caramel. Topped off with french vanilla ice cream and unsweetened whipped cream"... That sounded yummy and couldn't wait to give it a go - and i'm pleased i did. Exactly as decribed although i'm not sure how "unsweetened whipped cream" fits in to the profile - just my opinion! On inhale i get that bakery crusty and buttery taste, then straight after what tastes like lightly sweetened baked apples and very mild undertones of vanilla... very mild. On exhale there is definitely a creaminess left behind in the mouth and it's very moreish. Throat hit was perfect and well balanced, vapour production just as good as the others and flavour was described in essence very well by the vendor. Could this be an all day vape? YES - FINALLY i found one that i could definitely use all day, i found it annoying the sampler was only 4 ml - that's nothing to the average vaper so just as i was really enjoying the Gambit - i went dry. Albeit i was pleasantly suprised and throughly enjoyed the testing. On a score of 1 to 10 the Gambit gets an 8 - by far the best dessert type blend i've tried from the sample pack but not the best desert type blend i've had.

QUEENSIDE REVIEW: 12mg

Testing Period: 4 - 8 Hrs
Received: This product was purchased by me.
Equipment: Eleaf iStick, Aspire Nautilus Mini, Aspire Nautilus BVC atomizer - 1.8ohm @ 14 Watts.

The best citrus blend i've tested to date. Queenside is delicious and crafted perfectly. Deep, bold and authentically tasting orange tones on inhale with mild, creamy vanilla type undertones during exhale. I also got a slight taste of either a lemon or something that's adding a touch of sourness in the mix. The aroma is just delicious - dangerously delicious and again i'm annoyed the test didn't last long enough. 1 thing i really liked about this blend and the Gambit is the aroma carried by the vapour, they both have such a sweet and delicious air about them so you're sure not to offend bystanders with rouge - unusal smells. Throat hit was very satisfying and i think the citrusy flavouring played a little role in that along with the nicotine and PG. Vapour production was quality and the setup i've been using throughout the review has been solid. Could this be an all day vape? Very much so. To sum the Queenside up in 3 words: refreshing, satisfying and delicious. On a score of 1 to 10 the Queenside gets a majestic 10.

OVERALL OPINIONS:
Truth be told, i was expecting much more and it goes to show that sometimes hype is just hype! The signature line does have some delicious blends and some that are just ok. I'm currently waiting for the Mixology sample pack to arrive of which i'll make a seperate review and which i hope excites my taste buds a little bit more. Don't take what i've written in this part too negative because it's just my own opinion & if you're a Five Pawns customer and you find their blend's the best - great! whatever keeps you off the analogs is what really matters at the end of the day.
